Babywearing - Why It Matters and How to Get It Right

Guest blog by Hannah Wallace, founder of Wear My Baby and owner of Izmi
At Merry Go Round, we believe in giving families the best possible start. With less waste and more flexibility. That’s why our rental bundles include babywearing options like our Carrier Bundle, where you can try three different carriers for a full month before deciding what works best for you. Because when it comes to comfort, for you and your baby, we always say that one size never fits all.
To help demystify babywearing, we’ve teamed up with Hannah Wallace, one of the UK’s leading babywearing educators. Over the past 11 years, Hannah has supported close to 20,000 families, delivers NHS safety training, and worked with brands like Ergobaby, BabyBjörn and Carifit. She’s the founder of Wear My Baby, and now owner of Izmi - the award-winning brand creating ergonomic carriers for newborns through to six-year-olds. Her videos have reached hundreds of millions of parents online, and she’s passionate about helping families feel confident, connected, and calm through carrying.
We asked Hannah to share her top insights on babywearing: why it matters, how it works, and what parents should know before they choose a carrier.
What is babywearing, and what kinds of slings or carriers does that include?
Babywearing is the simple, age-old practice of carrying your baby on your body using a sling – whether that’s a structured buckle carrier, a soft stretchy wrap, or any of the many styles in between.
It’s not a trend – it’s how humans have always parented. Prams are a recent invention, but carrying has always been part of daily life.
Most families today use either buckle carriers (with padded straps and buckles) or wraps (long, soft fabric tied snugly to fit you and your baby).
Both can be incredibly safe and comfortable when fitted properly – and getting 1:1 support from a sling library or consultant can make a world of difference.
What are the top 3 benefits of babywearing?
- Practicality – A well-fitted sling or carrier gives you your hands back. It makes daily life easier – whether that’s managing the school run, making a sandwich, or just getting out the house.
- Soothing – Babies love being close. It helps them feel safe, calm, and settled. For many, it’s the easiest way to reduce crying and support better sleep.
- Connection – Babywearing helps you tune in to your baby’s cues more easily, strengthens your bond, and builds your confidence as a parent.
How much does babywearing support bonding?
Carrying your baby close helps them feel secure – they hear your heartbeat, feel your warmth, and are gently rocked by your movement. That closeness helps regulate their nervous system and promotes the release of oxytocin – the “love and lactation” hormone.
It’s also deeply reassuring for parents, especially in the early days. Babywearing gives you a way to connect with your baby while staying mobile and present.
Are there physical benefits for babies?
Definitely. Being held upright can ease reflux and wind, and many babies nap more easily in a sling. The motion and close contact help regulate their body systems – from temperature and breathing to digestion and sleep.
Carriers that support the ergonomic ‘M’ position (with knees higher than bum) are optimum for hip development and offer many of the same benefits as tummy time.
How does babywearing help with a parent’s day-to-day life?
It’s a total game-changer. You can carry your baby and get things done – stairs, transport, errands – all hands-free.
A good carrier distributes your baby’s weight evenly across your body, making it more comfortable than carrying them in your arms or juggling a buggy. It supports better posture – especially important post-birth.
Is babywearing helpful for postnatal recovery or mental health?
Yes – in more ways than most people realise. Holding your baby close encourages oxytocin, which supports emotional wellbeing and breastfeeding. Babywearing can reduce anxiety, overwhelm, and feelings of isolation.
Physically, a well-fitted carrier supports your healing body and allows you to stay close to your baby without strain.
Any myths or misconceptions you'd love to bust?
So many!
One big myth is that all carriers are safe for newborns. They’re not. Some brands say “newborn-safe” when it’s hard to achieve a truly safe position. A loose or low carry can risk slumping, which may restrict breathing. Getting a safe fit – so they're always High, Tight and In Sight – is crucial.
Another is the Instagram effect. Just because a sling looks great online doesn’t mean it’s safe. We’re seeing more poorly designed or badly positioned carriers promoted online. Always check: your baby should be high on your chest, snug against your body, and with their face clearly visible.
Then there’s the idea that some carriers are “bad for your back.” It’s usually about fit, not the style. A properly adjusted carrier should feel snug and balanced.
What do you recommend for parents who feel unsure about what kind of carrier to choose?
Think of it like finding a good pair of shoes or jeans. The right fit makes all the difference – and what suits one person might not suit another.
That’s why trying before you buy is so helpful. Whether it’s a sling library, a rental bundle, or a fit session, testing options helps you discover what works for you. Most parents end up with more than one – different carriers for different needs.
How can renting or trying a few carriers help?
Trying before you buy gives you confidence – and helps you avoid costly mistakes. Carriers feel very different once you’ve worn them in real life, with your baby, on your body.
With rentals or side-by-side comparisons, you’ll quickly get a feel for what’s comfy, what’s easy to adjust, and what your baby likes.
Any top tips for nervous first-timers?
Start small, and go easy on yourself. Try your carrier for the first time when your baby is calm and fed. It’s totally normal if they fuss a little at first.
Practise in front of a mirror, or over a bed. Watch a video, follow the instructions slowly, and don’t rush. No one gets it perfect straight away.
We offer free 1-to-1 video fit checks with every Izmi purchase so you can get personalised guidance and carry confidently from day one.
And remember: babywearing is a skill. Like learning to tie your shoelaces. A little practice goes a long way.
Lastly – why do you personally love babywearing?
I didn’t choose babywearing because of a parenting philosophy. I did it because I had to. When my first son was born, I really struggled. Babywearing saved my sanity. It was the only thing that helped him sleep and gave me the ability to cope.
Now, 11 years on, I’ve seen how powerful the right carrier can be. I’ve watched it change people’s daily lives – bringing calm, connection, and confidence. That’s why I’m so passionate about making sure every parent can carry comfortably, safely, and with support. Because babywearing doesn’t just look lovely – it makes life easier. It matters.
We’re delighted to be working with Hannah and the Izmi team to launch the Izmi Toddler Carrier – a brilliant, ergonomic option for families who want to continue babywearing beyond the early months.
